The Origin Story of Driving Shoes (aka "Bean Shoes")
Published on: June 3, 2025
The iconic "bean shoes" (commonly known as driving shoes) trace their origins to 1986, when Italian luxury brand Tod's introduced a revolutionary design under the name Moccasin-gommino. These shoes were initially crafted for Ferrari Formula 1 drivers, prioritizing lightweight comfort and grip during long hours behind the wheel.
The nickname "bean shoes" stems from the 133 rubber pebbles (resembling tiny beans) meticulously embedded into the sole and heel. This design evenly distributed pressure, creating a sensation likened to "walking on a waterbed". The pebbles also enhanced traction, making them ideal for driving pedals.
Tod's founder, Diego Della Valle, transformed his family’s small shoemaking workshop (established in 1970) into a global empire by blending traditional Italian craftsmanship with innovative functionality. Over time, the bean motif became a signature symbol, appearing on other Tod's products.
Today, these shoes transcend their automotive roots, embodying a blend of luxury and practicality that resonates worldwide.
